Storage and Distribution System

The storage and distribution system performs storage and delivery functions. It includes elevators, in/out conveyors, cargo handling machinery, etc. The elevator can perform multi-layer cargo storage and lift cargo to high-level positions. Depending on the characteristics of the goods, the in/out conveyor can use belt conveyors, motorized roller tables, or chain conveyors, etc., mainly transporting goods to the rack position where the elevator goes up and down. Loading and unloading machinery is responsible for loading and unloading goods in and out of the warehouse. It usually includes loading and unloading machinery such as trucks and forklifts.

Warehouse Control System

– The management and control system usually adopts computer control and management, applying different control methods depending on the different conditions of the automatic rotating racks. More advanced automatic rotating rack control systems use centralized control, separate control, and distributed control, meaning that the control system consists of a management computer, a central control computer, and a programmable controller directly controlled by the rotating rack and in-out transport.

Types of AS/RS Rack Storage Systems

– Vertical Lift Module (VLM)
VLMs consist of a column of trays at the front and rear of the module with an automatic inserter/extractor in the center to store and retrieve the required trays.
– Vertical Buffer Module (VBM)
A cost-effective tote handling system consisting of an enclosed racking system with a movable mast in the center. It stores and retrieves totes, bringing them to a convenient picking station or automatically distributing them via an outbound conveyor.
– Vertical Carousels
Vertical carousels are like vertical elevators, but the system rotates like a Ferris wheel instead of an elevator. They deliver stored items safely and quickly to the desired location. Vertical carousels can be installed with integrated drawers, trays, racks with compartments, bins, intermediate shelves, etc., and can be locked for enhanced security. They are ideal for applications with lower ceilings and for storing small to medium-sized parts and materials that are relatively uniform in size.
– Horizontal Carousels
Horizontal carousels offer accuracy, speed, and space savings. Instead of workers having to walk and search for parts, rotating bins are automatically delivered to them so that multiple orders can be processed at once. Furthermore, horizontal carousels can significantly reduce the amount of labor required as they automate many picking tasks. Horizontal carousels are an ideal solution for parts workflow or buildings with low ceilings that may not accommodate a vertical lift module or vertical carousel.
– Crane-based Mini-Load AS/RS
With a crane-mounted load handling device, uniquely dedicated to each extremely dense storage aisle, mini-load handles loads in bins, boxes, or trays.
– Floor Robots
This solution stores inventory on mobile storage racks that are retrieved and transported from storage to the operator’s access area by a fleet of mobile, autonomous robots.
