Pallets come in many different shapes, sizes, and types. Although the 48 x 40 GMA pallet is by far the most common size and has become the “standard,” there are other widely used pallet types. Is there a standard pallet size?
– There is no truly “standard” pallet size, however, the 48×40 pallet is so common that it is considered a standard size.
– The GMA pallet specifications that the organization originally created are important because one of the standard pallet sizes set was 48 inches x 40 inches, or 48 x 40.
– 48 x 40 GMA Pallet:
+ Usually 6.5″ high
+ Weighs an average of 37 lbs., but can be much heavier
+ Deck boards are 3.25″ wide, 40″ long, and .31″ thick
+ Can hold up to 4,600 lbs.
– The 48 x 40 pallet is very popular because it is so versatile. Also recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (IOS) for its specifications, it can be used for many things, from dry goods to dairy products and produce.
It is important to note that there is no widely accepted standard for pallet sizes. Companies and organizations use hundreds of different pallet sizes globally. While no single standard governs pallet manufacturing, some sizes are so widely used that they have become “standard,” such as the GMA pallet.

Wooden Pallets
Most pallets are made of wood, although some are made of plastic and metal. However, wood has several advantages over other materials. Wood is renewable and does not require mining like metal or long-term landfill waste like plastic pallets. They can also be easily recycled or repaired, which cannot be said for other materials. In addition, changes can also be made to wooden pallets without much time or special equipment. Pallets can be disassembled and made into a different size by cutting or joining pieces, all that is needed are nails and a saw.
Two-way and four-way pallets
48 x 40 pallets have either two-way or four-way entry depending on their design. Two-way pallets are designed to be lifted by the deck boards, which is the only way a forklift or pallet jack can lift them. In this design, the stringers are not notched, so it can only be lifted along the length of the pallet between the stringers. Notching is when a small cut is made at the bottom of the stringer, allowing the forklift to pass through the sides of the pallet. Four-way pallets are best lifted by their stringers or more rigid blocks. Four-way pallets are generally heavier, larger, and more durable. Four-way pallets have entry slots on all four sides for full accessibility and can be supported by notched stringers or by wooden blocks instead of stringers.
Recycled Pallets
Recycled pallets can vary in appearance and quality. Some just don’t look as clean as new ones but are structurally similar. Some have small cracks or splits in the wood, while others have broken deck boards and have been repaired once or multiple times. There is no real standard for pallet size, nor is there a standard for classifying the quality of recycled pallets. There are different ways to classify pallet quality, and the names of the types also vary. For example, we have eight types of recycled pallets so you know exactly what type of pallet you will receive.
