What is a Wood Reel?
A wood reel is an important component in the structure of gantry cranes and overhead cranes, playing the role of winding and releasing cables automatically, creating movement for lifting and transporting goods. Wood reels are often confused with rollers due to their cylindrical design, but in reality, reels perform a completely different task in this system.
The material of the reel can be steel, stainless steel, cast iron, or wood. Wood reels are also known as tanks, spools, or reels. On the outside, the reel looks simple, but inside it contains many structures and requires highly accurate technical calculations.
Wood Reel Structure
The basic structure of a wood reel includes:
- Wood Reel Body: Has a circular shape with a central axis for winding the cable, the outside is often designed as a flywheel. Standard materials are usually industrial wood or treated natural wood.
- Electric Cable (if any): In some applications, wood reels can be combined with electric cables to transmit electrical energy. The electric cable is usually covered with insulating material and reinforced with a core to increase elasticity and durability.
- Other parts: Depending on the specific design and application, the wood reel may come with a motor, friction reducer, slip ring system, winding drum, and other parts.
The structure of the cable winding wood reel may vary depending on the type, power cable, specifications, and cable length. The manufacturer will determine the number of mechanical motors needed to provide sufficient torque based on the actual type of use.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Wood Reels
Advantages:
- High durability: Wood is a material with good durability, especially when treated properly.
- Good load-bearing capacity: Wood reels can withstand large loads, suitable for many industrial applications.
- Easy to process: Wood is an easy-to-process material, allowing the creation of reels with different sizes and shapes.
- Reasonable price: Compared to other materials such as steel or stainless steel, wood is usually cheaper.
Disadvantages:
- Easily affected by the environment: Wood can rot, warp, or crack if exposed to high humidity or extreme temperatures.
- Poor wear resistance: Compared to metal materials, wood has lower wear resistance.
Applications of Wood Reels
Wood reels are widely used in many industries, including:
- Gantry cranes and overhead cranes: Wood reels are an important part of the lifting system of gantry cranes and overhead cranes.
- Industrial machinery: Wood reels are used in many different types of industrial machinery, such as weaving machines, printing machines, and woodworking machines.
- Conveyor systems: Wood reels can be used in conveyor systems to move goods.
